Record Store Day

Just got 20 of these delivered today…looking great, 12″ vinyl, so glad it’s back and production costs have tumbled.

I’m really pleased with this record, it sounds great. Excellent drumming and fantastic grooves which feel totally unique. We used very little compression and a tiny touch of reverb and absolutely no computers or plug ins at any stage of the recording, including the mastering.

The result is a real dynamic sound, like Can and Neu!. For me it’s a true Krautrock album. It has the sound and feel and doesn’t feature that fucking Klaus Dinger beat that everyone thinks makes something Krautrock.

I’m gonna send one to Michael Rother (of Neu! and Harmonia) and see what he thinks! (Slightly shitting myself).

    1. I will get banned from record store day if I sell these online. Apparently the shops sell the remaining stock the following day online, so if you’re quick you will get one. Other than that, they end up on eBay and discogs. I’m told that everything that is associated with record store day usually sells out pretty quickly. Sorry I can’t help Mathias but I’m sure we can find a way so you won’t miss out. 😉

  1. This sounds and looks wonderful ….I shall certainly look out for this when the day arrives……But I do have my misgivings about the general way in which Record Store Day has now been hijacked in recent years by all those opportunistic fuckers who simply have no interest in the bands they are buying and just cynically snap up copies of these releases to make a fast buck on Ebay within hours at vastly inflated prices – such tactics need to be stamped out cos it stops proper fans from getting hold of them in many cases. To me, EVERY day should be Record Store Day, not just one day a year, and I would also argue against bands reissuing songs or indeed whole albums from their back catalogue on special formats which reeks of exploitation of their fans who they *know* would rush out and buy the same record over and over again cos it’s on custard coloured and mint scented vinyl in a hexagonal fold cloth-bound sleeve or something. Every artist should be forced to release EXCLUSIVE items on vinyl for RSD which has never been issued before, to me that is more in keeping with the spirit of the whole exercise, NOT yet another opportuntiy for big wig record companies to further line their coffers by reissuing classic titles over and over again. It’s just such a swizz to do that sort of thing!

    1. Couldn’t agree more. Cargo wanted to do a vinyl release of our 4th album but I wanted to put something unique out, something different and new. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about the greed heads who simply buy up everything to flog it on eBay except only allow one copy per person. It’s great for a group like six by seven though. Once a year we can sell 500 vinyl and put some much needed money in the bank. Sadly, it’s all about survival, for us and the record shops.

  3. Chris:

Do you have any copies left that you’re allowed to sell now?

By the way, I absolutely hate everything about Record Store Day – it has nothing to do with appreciating record stores, records, bands or record buyers. It’s just an elitist, overpriced way to release music in limited editions that will more than likely end up in the hands of Ebay sellers who know nothing about the records they bought. I just looked up the RSD Magazine 12” on Ebay – Winning bid: £52.88 for a 4 song 12” that was just released yesterday for £13.99. Its disgusting and I don’t understand why you’d even want to be associating with the scum that the RSD executives have turned into. They’re almost as bad as Sepp Blatter.

Anyway, I’m off to watch West Ham on my PVR, so hopefully the day will get better.

    All the best, Ian

    1. Hi Ian, yes, I agree with everything you are saying. This is the second time I’ve got involved in Record Store Day. The first tie was the first one where I sold 20 EP’s at Rough Trade in London. It was a small affair back then and no one even asked about it. Now it’s been turned into one of those, what I would call, Happy Days. You know, like St. Patricks Day has become or Valentines or Mothers Day. It’s got that ‘They’re selling Hippy wigs in Woolworths’ and ‘Have a nice day’ Mc Donalds bubblegum vibe about it. People queing up to make a quick buck while others who can afford it just wait for eBay a few hours later. It’s quite elitist when you think about it. I used to like doing timed limited editions but then I got so much hate mail when I did them that I stopped doing them. I was shocked when Cargo, my labal / distributor, suggested we do 500 of this album! They said they would all sell in a day. I don’t know if it’s true and we have, I’ll find out next month. I’m not even sure that if we haven’t we are allowed to sell them? I bought 20 and have some here if anyone wants one who didn’t get one. Just email me. Hope you are well and ‘Up The Irons’.

I’ll take one…what’s the cost for vinyl and shipping? Via PayPal??
        Thanks

      2. Hi Chris,

I didn’t realise my email would show up as a public comment. Anyway, I appreciate your response and your efforts to make the record available to your fans at a reasonable cost.

My brother sent me an email about RSD, but he didn’t understand what it’s turned into. I sent him several rants, including some of the same comments you made about St. Patrick’s Day – the one day a year I would never go to a pub.

I got an email last week from Magazine’s label telling me about the new RSD 12” indicating “No record store will reserve a copy. That’s the idea of the day. You pitch up at the cool stores and grab a copy while stocks last. Bit of a lottery to be fair. I suggest that you contact the cool vendors where you can buy vinyl and ask for it by name. If it’s a “yes, we will be stocking it” then get your skates on…”. The combination of cool vendors, cool customers and Amazing Race type of approach to buying records is not for me. Compare this RSD release with the ‘Hello Mister Curtis (with apologies)’ 180gm Vinyl 10”, which is still available several years later, reduced to £5 (although it’s a slightly different situation, because the content was all the same as available on the full length LP/CD, as opposed to a supposedly better mastered version than the CD that came with Real Life + Thereafter).

        Thanks,
        Ian

  4. Hi Chris /all

I too agree about RSD. Much as I love records, I’ve got better things to do with my life than queue outside a record shop all night. And I wouldn’t dream of paying over the odds to some scumbag on eBay. Anyway, I’d like a copy please, if you could email me the details. Thanks, Robert.

  5. Hi Chris,

I would like to buy a copy of the RSD LP if you still have some… I live in denmark,
    thanks
    claus
